Asked my daughter about always a flag. She said when she was there this month there were flowers.

I was assigned to the army's Military District of Washington (MDW) PIO from 1971 - 1974 and again from Oct.1975 until I retired Oct 1979. My job included assisting media coverage in Arlington National Cemetery. Audie Murphy's grave was across the street from the Ampitheatre and Tomb of the Unknowns (previously the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier). There was no flag always at the Murphy gravesite except when all the other graves were so decorated for certain holidays.. In fact The Murphy family said Audie Murphy had specifically requested that his gravesite and headstone be just like every other soldier's. However to celebrate our nation's bicentennial in 1976 the headstones of all Medal of Honor recipients in ANC received gold lettering. Flowers were sometimes left by ANC visitors.

Some of the confusion may be with an Audie Murphy museum in Greenville, Texas and several Murphy Memorials...even one in France...and an Audie Murphy VA hospital in Texas...

Hey Dave....the official Audie Murphy website says he was in the Army from 42. to. 45 where he made a battle field commission to 1st. Lt. He was a member of the Texas National Guard from 50--to--66 where he made Major. And finally in the Army reserve from 66 to 69. He has the Medal of Honor....DS Cross...2-Silver Stars...Legion of Merit....2-bronze stars and 3-purple hearts. His grave is the second most visited at the cemetery behind only President Kennedy's. The cemetery had to build a flagstone walkway due to the traffic. He always insisted he was just a country boy from Texas.

Now that I think about it, I believe the Murphy family turned the gold lettering offer down because he wanted his headstone to be like all other soldiers.
