It is sad to think of all the radio I have listened to over the years, just fading away.
I guess as they say, ‘that's progress…”.
I remember listening to stations out of Chicago on Saturdays for the kids shows. Also Sky King, The Shadow, and many others. I think that was part of what got me interested in electronics.
I was located in New Mexico, amazing what long wire antennas could do.

Good thought Rick. I live in a 'small market' and we have an am station here that I buy 3 hours of time on Saturday night from 7 to 10. (almost embarrassed to tell you what they charge me) however, I do a 3-hour oldies show called Jukebox Saturday Night. I sell my own sponsors, play those oldies I enjoy from the 50's and 60's, cue burns and all! I never thought of putting my show on a podcast.....maybe I should explore that...thanks Rick.....are you going to be at the reunion?

Michael, perhaps a radio station would give you, or sell you, an hour or two of time. Or, rent a production studio for a chunk of time, record a program, and have it broadcast later, and/or post it on their website as a podcast.

With the right marketing, you can make a small station number one. Just gotta push the envelope! I had a daytime station in number two in our market by just pushing it!

All this negativity about investing in a small time radio station probably means I shouldn’t be investing in hiring guys to walk the streets with advertising on sandwich boards or maybe not even doing promotion with ads on printed match book covers?
Geez, more of my get rich quick ideas all shot to hell. I’ll listen to you guys and blow the budget and take my wife out to dinner tonight instead. My budget can cover burgers, fries and a couple of soft drinks - I'm the last of the big spenders.

I'd love to see the good guys in ownership again. MIchael, Roger et al.
The little guys with stations in Minneapolis seem to be selling. It's all retail stuff, garages, restaurants etc. Seems to be made to work...

Let the buyer beware. Lived there for five years. As soon as the lava hardens, For Sale signs are posted. I moonlighted the local radio market for a year, had phone links to the Big Island stations. Made several trips to the other islands, walked those lava flows myself. Kamaina status, or “Hapa Haoule”. Hang out with the natives.

As I look over the list of signups, I sure remember you, Sullivan and Hugh Morgan (if he is still coming). Maybe another one or two that I'm not sure of. Then, all the names that I see from the Yahoo group and Face Book. Looking forward to it. I live in Iowa, a little town south of the capital city called Norwalk. Regards,

Rick Fredericksen:
Starting an AFVN internet station would be extremely difficult, as I live on an avenue often traveled by wailing ambulances and other emergency vehicles. Soundproofing would be a bear, and moving at age 71 is not an option. It would be easier to set up an actual station. My stated retirement objective was to own a radio station and a chicken farm in Casper, WY. I would have a food supply and my own fun thing to entertain me and an audience.
As to what got many of us interested early in radio, Thomas John, there are archives of those grand programs, "Theatre of the Mind" as one's imagination described the players in the radio plays. Following link will start you off: https://archive.org/browse.php?field=subject&mediatype=audio&collection=oldtimeradio

What about internet radio. No tower, no transmitter, no FCC. Even the old vets now living back in Nam could hear AFVN again. American Forces Veterans Network! Some of the old psa's would still apply, like Count Malaria.

I just talked with a man in an adjoining state who is looking to buy a decent sized AM station. Very low price for the license with a cheap studio lease, and excellent tower site including the land. In this case with you working for the fun of it, streaming, and all the other things to engage the older listener and sell sponsors who target that population with their products then it can work out. Canton and Bryson City NC are making it work with a really old country music format. Very low overhead... etc. I tend to measure based upon my own situation with a sizable amount of debt retirement. But it can be done on the cheap, but I'd sure work the streaming and Tune In aspects.

I tend to agree. With all the competition now in place and new competitors in the marketplace everyday it is really tough....The outdoor advertising company here installed two of the new video boards on the highway. I heard yesterday they have a six-month waiting list to get on... that's tough to deal with. An advertiser who admitted that his radio advertising on this station put people in his store, canceled and is waiting for a spot on one of those signs. Take the money and enjoy a vacation.

Michael, as a retired station owner [and] Vice president of one the most successful radio groups in the USA, if you have money to may be invest in owning a radio station with the format that you are talking about--forget about it. Why do you think Disney is getting rid of their AM stations? Spend the money take your wife for a nice vacation.
