My mother was a member of the Civil Air Patrol during WWII. She worked at Badger Ordinance near Baraboo, WI. After her work shift, she would put in four hours at one of the gunnery sites surrounding the plant as a spotter.
Somewhere I have a picture of her in her uniform, which included khaki pants rather than a skirt.

From a story about a missing woman in Grand Teton National Park: “Park law enforcement rangers and officers with Teton County Sheriff's Office said the Wyoming Civil Air Patrol helped find the girl.”

The Civil Patrol was (and is) fairly active in Kansas possibly due to a relatively high number of "Flying Farmers." My first experience with the "military" was when I became a member of the Civil Patrol when I was 15 to 16 (1949-1950). I ended up giving a lot of the close order drill to the other cadets we would always have before a meeting. Perhaps this was because I had been involved with marching bands from grade 7. Enjoyed the classes on "how to fly an airplane" as well as the chances I had to go up in 2 or 4 seat Piper Cubs and Cessnas. Even got to handle the controls at times.

Don't know how many of you are familiar with the Civil Air Patrol but as a young man I was getting on the wrong track and through the recommendation of a teacher joined the local Cadet Squadron and it put me back on the right path. I owe a lot to the CAP...
