For Garry Cox,
I have you listed on the AFVN Roster as follows:

Cox, Garry  LCpl, NZ Army  1967-68

[Garry read the New Zealand news over AFVN radio out of Saigon.]

You are unique to AFVN, which--in my opinion--is a good thing.  If you have any stories for photos you would like to share with us on AFVNVETS.net, please send them to me at the above address.

Dickie and Ken, Garry "found me" by posting a message to the AFVNVETS.net Webmaster (i.e., Yours Truly).  I added him to the AFVN Roster and sent his message on to Bob M who then invited him to join the group.  Confusing?   Yes,

Amazing story. I spend a few weeks each year in Orewa on the Hibiscus Coast. I really love New Zealand. Flew with them a couple of times in Vietnam on their Bristol Freighters.

Dickie: New members are often found by Bob and welcomed to our group before they post anything.  I was just offering a welcome to Garry, with whom I have not yet communicated.  Remember, most of the subscribers to this list never post regardless of how long they have been members.

Thanks Sgt. Major, Sometimes we get a message saying something like...."Charlie has joined the network, everyone welcome him".  This is the first we have heard of Charlie and we don't know if he was in the Army or Navy, when he was in Vietnam, and where he lives now..   It makes it sort of hard to welcome someone with no info. Sometimes we get a message saying...".Hello, I am Charlie and I am new to the network and I was in Vietnam for the following dates."...   It just makes it easier to make them feel at home. I was just asking because I saw what I thought was a "half" message!!  Half-assed---

Ken.. I think you and Bob may have received a message from Garry on the “webmaster” channel.  I have not seen anything from him on the regular AFVN web site.

Hi,
To put things into perspective, I was a New Zealand soldier attached to HQ NZ V Force in Saigon in 1967/68. During my tour we were asked by AFVN Saigon if we had someone who was interested in reading the New Zealand news over both the FM and Am radio networks in Saigon.   Two of us we picked and over a period of two weeks would alternate in reading the news (taped then edited).. After this period the next time I went to the station to record the news was told I would be reading live.   You can imagine how nervous I was, but apparently went well and I continued to do this till the end of my tour in 1968. I meet some marvellous American DJ’s during this time and would like to thank them for their help while learning the tricks, and laugh now at some of the pranks that were played.
Hope this helps
Regards
Garry Cox.
