Tomorrow I leave on a vacation to Vietnam.
Vacation and Vietnam...they don't quite sound right together, but it is so. I have waited many years for this day. I remember one day in May of 1969. I was standing on a street corner in Vung Tau. I did a 360 with my eyes wide open, the air was fragrant with the smell of flowers blooming..for a second, I felt like I was in a beautiful place, then the reality struck and I remembered where I was and what was going on around me.
I vowed to return to Vietnam under a different circumstance and see the place as it should be. I have spoken to many who have made the trip and they have no regrets. I do have one mission planned. I will attempt to locate the original site of Det 5 Hue. I was OIC of Det 5 Quang Tri. The Quang Tri Det 5 site was just about 6 clicks north of the former Det 5 site in Hue. The equipment was moved following Tet of 1968 when the NVA overran Hue and fellow AFVN staffers were lost and captured. I will pay my respects to our lost brothers, there, for all of us.
I will report back.
