Hi Rick,
I was stationed at the Naval Air Facility Cam Rahn Bay from June 1970 until November 1970. Then I was transferred to Light Attack Squadron Four (VAL-4) at the Binh Thuy Naval support facility until I was discharged from the Navy in January 1972. I recall that we had TV and radio stations at Cam Rahn Bay but I only recall a radio station at Binh Thuy. I made some reel to reel tapes of some radio shows at Cam Rahn and they are still around here somewhere.
I don't recall any specific things about the broadcasts except that they played good music. I was a child of the 60s and so I really liked rock and roll. The music was right on. You guys did a good job.
Thanks,
Tom Herlacher

Hi Gang
This is our 18th anniversary here on Yahoo Group. This group was inspired by the late JOC Jack Leigh, Ret'd when he started calling people [like me] in an attempt to find former JO2 Terry Oliver.
Thanks for signing up here.
Best wishes,
Bob Morecook

Group,
I think it is my mouse malfunction which is deleting mail unintentionally so ... For those who “give up” it was Edward Kennedy driving off the bridge at Chappaquiddick and Mary Jo Kopechne drowning on July 18, 1969. Apollo 11 launched July 16 and landed July 20, more than covering the Kennedy incident. I remember that years earlier after John and Robert were killed psychic Jean Dixon said Edward would never be US President.

Nice memories Tom.
I suspect music was the most cherished thing AFVN provided most vets, so you are in good company. Our tours in Vietnam nearly overlapped; had you been in Cam Rahn just three months earlier, you might have seen one of my TV newscasts from Nha Trang (Hon Tre Island), but you were probably listening to rock and roll anyway.
Best regards, Rick

Rick,
I was at FEN News in Tokyo. And who remembers what other event was overshadowed and got such little coverage at the time? Clue: It involved the death of a woman.
The other memorable event; Kennedy assassination; I was at Third Army HQ Info Office Ft McPherson, Atlanta. The SP4 speechwriter who had a teletype in his office came in and said the President has been shot. We checked all the TV channels and there was nothing about it, so we doubted it for several minutes until it finally came on. I had just bought some new gear for an inspection the next day. It was canceled and I still have the boots, never worn.
What other are memorable? Nixon resigns? I was finally to get a grandchild?

Hi Tom.
Just curious to know your top memory, or two, from AFVN. Example: the moon landing, etc. When/where were you?
Rick
