In California, you can get a license plate with your service branch. T here are also some units as well, like 101st Airborne for example. They also have Purple Heart and MOH recipient plates. Found this online just now:

In Iowa, you can do an internet search to see if your preferred wording is available at the DOT. If AFVN has been taken, try others: AFRTS, AFRS, NhaTrang, Da Nang, DwnBustr, etc. Iowa has a maximum of 7 letters, but this may vary state to state.

In Wisconsin I have two cars, one with AFVN69 & other with AFVN70 (69-70 being the years at AFVN Saigon.
