Thanks....My daughters set it up for me.

-- Afterword --

I made arrangements to contact Bob Nelson and Jack Holsomback via Skype during the Memphis conference.  I was able to contact Bob Nelson on September 6th, 2012 and Tom Fowlston put him "up on the big screen" while Ron Hesketh (?) grabbed my video camera and panned around the room so Bob could see all of us.  I think that everyone enjoyed it very much.

Unfortunately I was never able to contact Jack during the conference.  Later on he wrote that he had suddenly become busy with other things and wasn't at home all that often,

Ken,

You may be right, but the attached [page from the Geocities Roster] is all I have to go on.  It was taken from the AFVN Roster that was once in the Web.

Ken,

My PDF copy of the AFVN roster shows "Moore, Joseph B. SP5, USA (68-69)"

Also, the name may be "Rehrauer, John, SFC, USA (69-69)"

He was a sergeant. I served with him at the AFVN station in Saigon in 1969.   He was always saying when he got out of the Army he was going to Hawaii and be a TV broadcaster.  We sort of chuckled about that...who knew.

Ray,

While you were there around Jan 1969 or so I used to contribute a phoner spot from CMAC in Saigon on action in the Saigon area.  It was used on the 6pm newscast (I think that's when it was) and I never had a chance to record any airchecks.  I would appreciate it if you, or anyone, hears my horrible efforts on any of these CDs.  I would love to have a copy of one or more of those spots.

He was in the Army: rank I'm not sure of.  He is now news anchor for KHON2 in Hawaii.  I contacted him last week about the reunion.  He won't be able to make it as he used up a month of his vacation doing The Odd Couple with Pat in Connecticut in June/July.  I attached the photo he sent me. I will try to get a contact from Joe for Pat.

More from the CD patch!

I have four voices identified for CDs 25, 26, 27, and 28.  The first speaker doesn’t ID himself, but the others are John Rehrauer, Pat Sajak, Scott Manning, and Paul Bottoms.  I think the first speaker is Scott Manning, but I’m not sure.

CD 29 is Pat's Dawnbuster, but there is also a cameo interaction with Joe Moore -- wasn't he an Army Sgt?  [NB: Sp5 Joseph Moore, USA, was with AFVN about the same time as Ken.]

At one of our DD reunions, the folks from Texas Tech Vietnam Archives (or whatever the official title is) came so they could encourage us to donate our stuff to them and also to hear/record our stories.  I don't know if they do that any more, but it might be someone to contact to get AFVN stories down in for posterity.

More from the CD patch!

Discs 22 and 23 are, indeed, copies of two ABC syndication Brother John hours.  They’re clean enough that they may have been dubbed directly from the LP to tape rather than captured off the tower signal.  About half way through Track 2 of Disc 23 Brother John does a five-minute interview with one of the playwrights who created (and acted in) Hair.  Something was bothering me while listening to these cuts and then it hit me -- they would have felt a lot more comfortable had I been smoking some Minnesota ditch weed or Iowa rope roaches.

CD 21 is, indeed, Scotty Brink’s Go.  It includes two gems.  The first is a full newscast by Army Specialist Alan Stevens, and the second is a spot soliciting audience input which I believe is voiced by Chris Noel.

We must have a millennium of experience in military broadcasting/broadcasting and yet I don't think anyone has suggested that we begin to see if we can't communicate to those folks currently doing our jobs in Afghanistan.  Couldn't we at least float an idea to AFN to a "Voices from Vietnam" talking to "voices on the scene" in the Middle East?

Friends:

I tried to work with AFN, but hit a stone wall.  I asked for contact information about broadcasters in Iraq and Afghanistan.  No, that involved security.  OK, so how about if they send information from me to broadcasters in the field.  No, that could initiate security issues.  What could they do for us?  Well, they could post an email on the break room cork board at AFN headquarters.

Remember that story about the last day of broadcasting in Iraq?  The one with the individuals names and ranks?  I went on an Internet hunt for them and found two.  The first denied, in a voice that came from his boots, he had ever been in Iraq and ever been in broadcasting and had ever been a Sergeant.  He also said he didn’t enjoy his tour in Iraq.  The second one I found is doing production work for a Wisconsin television station.  I contacted the station and got an email address for him.  I sent him a message explaining what we were up to and asked if he would be interested in joining us.  He never responded to any of the three messages I sent him.

Maybe I gave up too easily, but I welcome any help in that arena.

'63 when AFRS was atop the REX Hotel, does that qualify me as "early?"  How about Jerry Masini who was there before me?  The station was at the REX before the Brinks.

Dickie has a copy of the English Language Observer (1963) [Available on this site - See Item 1--17] with the photo story about the first anniversary of AFRS Saigon, and if he doesn't forget, he will be bringing it to Memphis so everybody can see our version of "early."

Ken: I am an "early folk" arriving in country when the studio was at the Brinks, and we pulled cable during the construction of the new station.  We were the first detachment built and on air at Channel 11, Da Nang. I even flew a few times with the Blue Angels.  I still have no recordings of my broadcasts, except for my last trip when someone punched a two inch VCR in the Da Nang station for my last television broadcast (1971).

I wish we had some of Scotty Brink’s production tapes for “GO!” His Top-40 evening show, and some promos,  and other radio production bits, including outtakes with Ron Nottleson, Don Burns, and Cal LaMartiniere.  Late nights in Radio Production were often fun and funny.  Stress relievers.  Nick and I would hang out there between newscasts and offline actualities.

Yes, Bob, and of all the pieces to which I have listened, none predates 1967.   Pat and Paul get several promos, but the lack of early years’ material makes it difficult to call up some of the early talent that laid the groundwork for us all.  I wish some of the early folks could join us, but of the four of whom I am aware, three are in dire medical straits that make it impossible.

Subject:   More of Our Voices   [A list of the contents of a number of CDs received from Paul Kasper. ]

More content info:

CD 10 is Orient Express, Army Specialist Randy Stone, from either late August or early September of 1969.  One of the tunes he plays is “Moms” Mobley doing Abraham, Martin, and John.  Full show.

CD 11 features Army Specialist Paul Bottoms on Cut 1 and 2, telescoped.  At the end of cut 1 Nick Palladino reads a news intro, but his newscast is cut out.  Paul promos Scott Manning subbing for Pat on Dawnbuster while Pat is home on leave.  Tracks 3 and 4 are Air Force Sgt. Don Cottrell doing his Town and Country show.  He promos a newscast by Army Specialist Tom Fulton that leads off CD 12.

CD 12 begins with Track 1, a full newscast by Army Specialist Tom Fulton.  Track 2 seems to be a repeat of CD 11’s Track 3.  Track 4 is another full newscast by Army Specialist  Tom Fulton, apparently aired one hour after Track 1’s newscast.  In the newscast Tom reads a story about a major city teachers’ strike, anti-austerity programs in Europe, political corruption in Illinois, and a Democrat introducing Senate legislation regarding health issues.  I wonder where he got his crystal ball.  Track 3 also includes a full newscast by a woman from 1973, but she does not give any identifying information.  [NB: Possibly A1C Linda L. Liston, USAF, was with AFVN in Saigon in 1972-73.]

CD 13 is, as Paul indicated, MOOG music by Navy Photographer Ken Couch -- 44 minutes worth.

CD 14, Track 1 features a 42-minute Dawnbuster with Pat Sajak.  Pat promos Scott Manning at 12:30 into the cut.  Tex Ritter voices a promo for Paul Bottoms, and at 31:30 Rick Bednar reads a spot and gets a promo.  Track 2 is Paul Bottoms doing Golden Sound from the FM side at 10:54, slides into the 11:00 full newscast featuring the voice of Army Specialist Tony Brooks, then continues with another FM Golden Sound segment after the news.

CDs 15, 16, and 17 appear to be as advertised by Paul, but I haven’t yet listened to them.  I’m doing a production scan of the CDs such as I used in LA, so I’m skipping the more complex ones to knock out the next three “easy” scans.  My next post will include 15, 16, and 17.

CD 18 begins with a New Year’s Eve, 1969 Top 100 Countdown featuring the voice of Army Specialist Tom Watson.

So ends this edition of Our Voices!
