Note - iPads do not use a typical file structure like a PC, file handling is done by the apps that use them.  Check out the iStore for an app to help transfer the files. Here's an article that may help & provide some insight.

And here's another:

I've never used either so I can't vouch for them, but they should get you started.

Oh, I didn’t know that. I have had cell phones in the past, and each had a USB connection.  My latest purchase has been an Android phone, and that also has a USB connection.  Even my Nextbook has a USB connection.  I learned something new today. Thanks.

My guess would be to connect her I pad to another computer using the usb port and transfer or copy files to it and then move them onto an external HD.

Your daughter should be able to save her pictures and music onto her computer or iCloud (preferably computer) without losing it. Once she has saved it at least to her computer, she’ll be able to delete the information from her iPad. She’ll start making room on her iPad once she starts deleting the files she just finished copying over. She’ll need the USB cable that she received with her iPad. If she doesn’t have it, then she can purchase one from the store where she purchased her iPad.

While I don’t have an iPad, I’ve read that Apple has a $30 or so “Camera Connection Kit” that provides a USB port that may USB devices can use ? but not all.  That’s all I know about it but it may work.

Buy a thumb drive with a capacity approximating the size of space being used on her computer by her documents and photos.  Back up all of the files she has created to that thumb drive (it’s a USB device, so no need to think of terribly complex processes).  Don’t back up her operating system or the programs because they take up acres of space.  If she searches the Internet for any Apple OS group, she can get step-by-step instructions.
Good luck!

My daughter's iPad is full and she doesn't want to lose anything.  Anybody know how to save her stuff please.
