One of our MIDWAY Docents is one of those “boat people”, named Nguyen (go figure). He joined the US Navy, went to flight school, flew Tomcats and Hornets, and retired as a Captain (0-6). To this day he can’t talk about the evacuation. Gets real upset if anyone asks. Former refugees visit us every summer.

IMO, The war was not ours to win or lose.
It was up to RSVN and ARVN, and they failed despite the enormous effort, blood, and expenditure of the United States.

A lot of folks forget that the U.S. Congress did not honor the US's promised support made to the South Vietnamese during negotiations at the Paris Peace Talks. The South Vietnamese agreed to the Paris accords if the US provided non-combat support in the future. Congress reneged on that promise when the North Vietnamese came south in 1975.

At Christmas time 1968 I chatted with my friend Barry Farber (WOR New York City) in an hour-long interview, telling him the Vietnam War would be lost not in the rice paddies of Asia but in the halls of congress. Barry said it appeared I was getting full effect out of whatever I was smoking. After Saigon fell Barry never spoke to me again - of course I was right.

While there may be some truth in this the "loss" of the VN War is so much, much more complicated than the statements herein and the implications thereof.
