Received from a former Far East Network member.  Indicates "Good Morning" yell did not start at AFVN.

"I was a friend of Adrian Cronauer on Crete.  Loved his work. His Good Morning yell started there.  I had no idea a few years later I would also be with AFRTS but in support . We are still friends today.  You all are a great bunch of people...4 years at FEN Tokyo was a lot of fun.

Dawnbuster or Dawn Buster...the only way you could ever find out if one word or two words is preferred, is by asking the former hosts themselves.  Short of that, it doesn't matter.  This was radio; we only needed to know how to pronounce it.

Spotty memory, it was 72, but I think I hired him.  Bob M might remember....  Laurie Clemens was his girlfriend.  They were married, later divorced and I believe she was in law enforcement in California?

When I spoke to Adrian C. A few years ago.  He told me that extended Good Morning bit came from when he was in Greece.  There he would start the show with "Good Morning, Herkamore (sp)" with the expanded words as with we know of "Gooood Mooorning, Vietnam".

Dawn Buster show

Gooood Moooorrrnnning Vietnam!

For Vietnam AFVN developed a program along the lines of "G.I. Jive" from World War II.  A number of local disc jockeys helped make hour-long music programs for broadcast.  Perhaps the best known program became the morning "Dawn Buster" (Dawnbuster) program, (the brainchild of Chief Petty Officer Bryant Arbuckle in 1962) thanks to the popularity of the sign-on slogan "Gooooood Morning, Vietnam" (which was initiated by Adrian Cronauer and later became the basis for the film "Good Morning Vietnam" starring Robin Williams).  Among the notable people who were AFVN disc jockeys were Adrian Cronauer and Pat Sajak.  Beginning in 1971 AFVN began to close some stations in Vietnam.  The last station to close was in Saigon in 1973.

I agree.  There are flaws and gaps of information on the site.  But, one is reocities where I can’t find a list of Veterans and the other is http://www.afvn.tv/.  There’s something missing from each.

As Bob Moorecook says, “It’s a work in progress.”  Plus, these things are only as good as the information provided.  I know they have my name, but not the dates.  Who do we go to in order to correct or add info?  Dr. Bob?

ParkerTwo?

Joe

[NB:  "Parker Two" is Paul Kasper who was never with AFVN but he was a listener and a great fan when in VIetnam and helped greatly in developing the original Geocities site as well as this one.   The Geocities site can no longer be edited.

HTTP://www.afvn.tv was started by Bruce Wahl (1LT, USA  OIC, Pleiku  1970).

He has since let it expire but all of his information is now on this site.

It’s a commie plot, Jean!  You thought you were doing the Dawnbuster show, but in reality the VC had set up a dummy studio and lured you in to cover for Saigon Sally in the morning.  Man, were they ever devious!

Paul, fix the roster.  Jean has enough ev-eye-dense to back up his claim.  Besides, he’s lots bigger than you are.

Jean... If it helps I well remember you.  While you we're with the net in 66 i was heading to Dinfos to be an instructor.  Stayed there until the end of 69 when I went for a year in Iran (r/tv) then to AFN K-town and back at AFVN for all of 72.  Then I TT'd to AFN Frankfurt.  Went to Bremerhaven in June 75 and to XVIII Corps at Bragg.

AFRS founder and Dawnbuster creator JOC Bryant "Buck" Arbuckle indeed hosted the show himself in the beginning.  OIC Lt. Don Kirtley confirms it in his account of the station's early years in the history chapter in the MACOI site.

Kirtley also mentions Spec. Jerry Masini handling the show as well.  Although he is identified as a newsman in the July 1963 issue of the Observer newspaper.  He was gone by the time I arrived in late August of 1963.

Also, according to Kirtley,  Spec. Bob Andresen worked the shift.  If he did it had to have been before I arrived because he only worked as a newsman to my knowledge and our tours almost coincided.  Andresen, by the way, finished his hitch at AFN and went on to work there as a civilian for many years afterward.

Steve,  Sgt. Monty was a great guy to work for. I consider him a mentor who taught me a lot about writing.  Used to love to hear his WWII stories about "flying the hump" from India to China on assignments for Yank Magazine.  Sadly I didn't have any contact with him after he left Vietnam in the late Spring or Summer of '64.  He had to be close to retirement then and I believe he owned a place in San Antonio.

After he left the, new senior NCO who came in was an administrative type and the newsroom had to be  placed under a lower ranking EM for a time.  Don't know how that worked out.

Did you work with or for Frank someplace or were you at AFRS in that first year?

HELP!

I see both Dawn Buster an Dawnbuster on the web.  Which is correct?  A clipping of a AFRT (?) Vietnam from the early days seems to show it as "Dawnbuster" but the clipping is difficult to read.

I would like to standardize the spelling--but which is correct?

FOR Bob,

Your message leaves me confused.  You said you were there "all of 72."   OK, but was Allgood there and hosting Dawnbuster in 1971 and 1972?  And, who is Laurie?  And, did she host Dawnbuster?  I have never heard of that before.

FOR EVERYONE

Last names also, if possible, please!  (See "Laurie" above, I remember her (only on the site) and am sure I have a couple of pictures of her on the site, but without a last name I may have to, starting with "A," search through all 26 pages or the roster to find her last name.)

And, for that matter, Bob WHO?  I have "Bob Casey, Bob Morecook, Bob Nelson, Bob Peetz and Bob Young" in my list of "Bob's."

Also: Which is preferred/correct?  "Dawn Buster" or "Dawnbuster"??

Jim, I've enjoyed looking over the Dawnbuster hosting timeline.  I can't believe I knew, or have recently met, 6 of them!  I talked with Lee Hanson in April and he said he was in Vietnam in the timeframe you have.  So that is confirmed.  I talked with Cronauer and he was there from spring of 65 until spring of 66.  So that is confirmed.  The only problem is with Robin Williams, who is listed as 1967. As mentioned, he portrayed Cronauer, who was at AFVN prior to '67.  I actually think it would be nice if he were listed last, when the movie was made in 1987. It would be a neat surprise for anyone not so familiar with the history, and also make us not seem so old if there was still a host as late as '87!  The history site is spectacular.

I served with JO1 Bryant J. “Fatty” Arbuckle at NAS Lakehurst, NJ, in 1957. He broke me in from aerial photographer to Journalist.  When he left, I became the only rated Navy Journalist in the entire 4th Naval District.  My understanding is that Army Specialist Don Busser changed the name of the morning show to the “Dawnbuster”. Cronauer, I’m assuming, added the unique opening cry on air.  Please correct me if I’m wrong.

"Dawn Buster" or whatever would have appeared in print in the AFRS first anniversary newspaper article and I'd guess that whatever appeared in print would, could or should be the preferred version.
